Introduction

This mod tries to make damage and deformation undergone by vehicles more realistic by making them a little bit more fragile.

It builds on the work of ZZCOOL (taltigolt), TrophiHunter and Corinarh with their respective mods: GTA IV Vehicle Damage Handling Deformation, Real Vehicle Damage and Better Deformation + More Durable Cars.

Each of these mods had drawbacks that this mod is trying to address:
  • some of them didn't apply to all vehicles even if they said so.
  • some of them contained handling.meta that were messed up with modifications coming from others mods (e.g., one handling.meta set the weight of the Truffade Adder to 1800000 instead of 1800).
  • none of them is updated and you should not use any of them as they will replace your(s) handling.meta(s) with one(s) coming from older version of GTA 5.

Reading the package filename
As I began this mod recently, when you'll read these lines it's possible that you'll find only one version or flavor of the mod. I will add more versions and flavors over time.

There are many versions and flavors for this mod. There is one version for each build number of GTA 5 and three flavors (the number may change over time) per version. You need to install the version specifically made for your GTA 5 installation build number but you can choose any flavors you want for this version.
To help you know which file to download, each package filename follow the same form: "RVD-<VERSION>-GTA5-<VERSION2>-<WORD>.oiv", where <VERSION> is a string like "1.0", <VERSION2> is a number (often but not always near 1000) and <WORD> one of "HEAVY", "MEDIUM" or "LIGHT".

  • The <VERSION> string is the version of this mod, you should use the latest version available here for your GTA 5 build number
  • The <VERSION2> string is the build number of GTA 5 for which this mod version was made, you REALLY SHOULD install a mod version ONLY if this build number correspond to the build number of your current GTA 5 installation. To know the build number of your current installation go to the directory where GTA 5 was installed, right-click GTA5.exe, go to the "Details" tab. You'll see a file version (e.g., 1.0.877.1), the last two number are the build number (e.g., 877.1). If there is no version available for your particular installation build number, see the section How to get a version for your particular build number below.
  • The <WORD> string is the flavor of this mod version. The flavor determine how much fragile the vehicle will become. HEAVY is the most realistic flavor, in which the vehicle are the most easily broken. The LIGHT flavor is the one in which the vehicle are the hardest while still being a little bit more fragile than the original GTA 5. The MEDIUM flavor represent a compromise between the HEAVY flavor and the LIGHT flavor.

If you have already done any of the step below there is no need to do it again.

Before installing the mod I keenly ask you to read the entire description from the start as it can save you much trouble. I know it represent a great effort for some of you but it is really worth it.

How to get a version for your particular build number

I don't own all and every builds of GTA 5 so I don't have access to the necessary files to port this mod to your particular build number. However, if you give me the files I need I can make a version for your build number and upload it here so that others can download it too. You'll be given credit for having given me the files.
To this end, follow the tutorial below:

  • First make ABSOLUTELY SURE that your current GTA 5 installation is NOT modded AT ALL else you'll give me modded files and things will not work correctly. Also you'll penalize others since I'll update the mod version made from your files here
  • Create an empty folder somewhere, for instance on your desktop, named however you like (e.g., "handling_files")
  • Launch OpenIV and choose Windows under Grand Theft Auto V if it's not already done.
  • In the toolbar at the top, click Tools then Search.
  • In the searchbar at the top left of the dialog box type exactly "handling.meta" without the quotes.
  • In the drop-down list at the right of Search area: choose Search in game folder only.
  • Click the button Search at the top rigth of the dialog box then wait until the green progress bar at the bottom is FULLY loaded.
  • Click on the little black triangle at the right of Extract results just below the button Search then choose Extract all files
  • Navigate to the empty folder you created before then click Select folder at the bottom right corner of the dialog box.
  • Now upload this folder anywhere you want/like (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, ...). You can compress the folder into any format you want: .zip, .rar, .tar.gz, ...
  • Give me the link to the uploaded files in a comment and in the same comment tell me what your GTA 5 instalation build number is. If everything goes well, in a few hours or days I'll will upload a new version of the mod for your particular build number !

Thank you very much for having took the time to read all of this and doing these somewhat tedious steps.
